PT. Wijaya Karya Employs BIM Methodology to Design the Longest Double-decker Bridge in the World

PT. Wijaya Karya (Persero) Tbk, an Indonesia-based construction, mechanical, and electrical services firm, was tasked with designing the USD 530 million Harbour Road 2 — an 8.95 km toll road including a 3.95 km double-decker bridge — but faced severe constraints: limited space, heavy traffic, underground utilities, ecological rules prohibiting river piers, and a strict deadline ahead of the FIFA U-20 World Cup. To manage the complexity and schedule, PT. Wijaya Karya adopted Bentley’s BIM applications (including ContextCapture, OpenRoads, OpenBridge, SYNCHRO, Navigator, and others).

Bentley’s solutions enabled a 3D BIM workflow that used UAV imagery and ContextCapture to process 166 hectares in 15 days (about 6× faster), while Navigator improved collaboration and cut communication/inspection time by up to 30%. Design iteration in OpenRoads, OpenBridge, and gINT eliminated 1,600 meters of waterway foundation work and reduced design time by 25 days; overall Bentley tools increased bridge modeling efficiency by 40%, saved ~10% of construction costs, and SYNCHRO detected 85 clashes that avoided USD 60 million and four months of delay — accelerating design from seven months to four and delivering ROI roughly three years ahead of schedule.
