A Bentley Case Study
PDC Consultants, an Australian engineering design and drafting firm serving the mining and processing sectors, faced a complex, time‑critical challenge on Rio Tinto’s $1.5 billion Brockman Syncline No. 4 expansion: deliver high‑accuracy Mine Information Modeling (MIM), fully intelligent 3D review models, and 42,000 2D shop drawings while coordinating a distributed design team and meeting aggressive schedule milestones. To meet these demands PDC incorporated Bentley’s ProSteel into its advanced 3D modeling and detailing workflow.
Using Bentley ProSteel for structural detailing, clash detection, and electronic fabrication output, PDC created integrated intelligent models that enabled parallel workflows, accurate visualization, and automated documentation. Bentley’s solution cut production of 2D review drawings by 50 percent, reduced modeling and detailing man‑hours by 10–20 percent, helped complete deliverables about four months earlier than expected, and materially reduced on‑site rework and construction waste.
