A Bentley Case Study
PLP Architecture faced the challenge of designing the complex, context-sensitive roof for the $969 million Francis Crick Institute in London, reconciling strict operational requirements, community concerns, and historic surroundings. To address this, PLP used Bentley software—notably GenerativeComponents alongside MicroStation and Bentley Architecture—to drive a parametric, real‑time modeling approach to the roof and dependent geometry.
Using Bentley’s GenerativeComponents PLP tested more than 100 design iterations, shared a single parametric model with up to 70 project stakeholders, and exported data in six file formats to streamline coordination. The Bentley solution reduced risk of error, enabled rapid on‑the‑fly changes (including a last‑minute 3.5 m adjustment), optimized photovoltaics to help achieve a BREEAM Excellent target, rationalized louver fabrication batches, and helped secure a planning resolution to grant consent within 15 weeks.
