Oporto Water Utility Develops Technology Platform for Integrated Management of Urban Water Cycle

Águas do Porto, the Oporto water utility responsible for managing the city’s entire urban water cycle for ~500,000 people, faced the challenge of integrating dozens of siloed systems and large streams of real‑time sensor, billing, GIS, and modeling data into a single smart platform. Through an international tender the utility selected a consortium including Bentley to deliver the H2Porto Technology Platform, using Bentley products such as ACTION Server, WaterGEMS, SewerGEMS, and OpenFlows FLOOD to unify forecasting, modeling, and operational data.

Bentley implemented the modeling and predictive capabilities, creating a digital twin of water supply, wastewater, stormwater, and coastal systems with daily automated forecasts and on‑demand scenario analyses (pipe bursts, valve/pump shutoffs, IWA water balance). The solution enabled proactive management, delivered measured benefits — 25% operating gains from real‑time access, ~30% fewer water supply failures, and data reliability approaching 99% — and published results via web services and dashboards for improved decision making.
