Liaoning Water Mitigates Flood Risks with Dongtaizi Reservoir

Liaoning Water Conservancy and Hydropower Survey and Design Research Institute led the Dongtaizi Reservoir design to mitigate severe flood risks and provide water to Linxi County in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia. Facing complex terrain, a rockfill and concrete dam with intricate hydraulic, electrical and ecological fishway requirements, the institute turned to Bentley’s BIM solutions—notably OpenRoads Designer and OpenBuildings Designer—to move beyond traditional 2D methods.

Bentley delivered integrated 3D geological surveys, multidisciplinary modeling, parameterized dam sections, and automated clash detection to produce accurate excavation plans and modular concrete designs. Using Bentley software, the team cut design errors by 90%, boosted design efficiency by 40% (completing the design two weeks early), minimized rework, and established a digital twin to support construction, operations, and maintenance.
