John McAslan + Partners Uses 3D Modeling to Facilitate Design of King’s Cross Station

John McAslan + Partners led the GBP 547 million redevelopment of London’s King’s Cross station—part of a 67‑acre urban regeneration—facing the challenge of integrating a Grade 1 listed façade and 19th‑century structures with a state‑of‑the‑art transport hub while coordinating dozens of stakeholders. To tackle this complexity the firm used Bentley MicroStation and GenerativeComponents for 3D modeling and BIM-enabled collaboration.

Bentley’s MicroStation platform provided federated models, integrated survey data, and rapid design verification, enabling accurate prototyping (including modeling 5.2 million ceramic tiles) and smoother coordination across architects, engineers, fabricators, and heritage bodies. The Bentley tools helped deliver the 7,500 m2 single‑span western concourse (20 m rise, 150 m span), reveal the restored Grade 1 façade, reduce errors and costs, speed approvals and fabrication, and avoid disruption to London Underground and mainline services.
