Italferr Uses Digital Twins to Build Pergenova Viaduct in Genoa, Italy

Italferr S.p.A., part of the Italian State Railways Group, was commissioned to rapidly design an emergency replacement for the collapsed Morandi Bridge in Genoa — a EUR 202 million Pergenova Viaduct project that demanded a complete design in just three months while construction began. To meet tight safety, footprint, and multidisciplinary coordination requirements, Italferr turned to Bentley and its BIM/digital twin toolset, using Bentley applications such as MicroStation, OpenRoads, OpenBuildings Designer, ProjectWise, SYNCHRO, Descartes, Navigator, and LumenRT.

Using Bentley’s digital twin and BIM methodology, Italferr created a unified 3D model that federated 34 separate discipline models, automated workflows with SYNCHRO 4D scripts, and used ProjectWise for a single source of truth and Navigator for clash detection. The Bentley-enabled solution let the team complete the design on schedule, reduce clashes and rework, accelerate decision-making and cost forecasting, and streamline construction planning — preserving the project timeline and restoring a vital transport link for Genoa.
