A Bentley Case Study
Sweco Nederland (Sweco NL) led the design for Bergen’s 9-km light-rail extension and faced the challenge of coordinating 18 engineering disciplines across five countries, 24 contracts, mountainous terrain, and many disparate data sources and software tools—constraints that made manual processes error prone and too slow. To address this, Sweco adopted Bentley’s digital stack, including ProjectWise, MicroStation, OpenRail Designer and OpenBuildings Designer, and piloted Bentley’s iModel.js/iTwin services and iTwin Design Review to enable an open, connected data environment.
Bentley implemented an interoperable, model-driven workflow and a continuously synchronized digital twin so teams could visualize changes, automate updates and co-engineer across disciplines. The Bentley solution delivered measurable gains: about 15% reduction in design time, roughly 500 resource hours and NOK 500,000 saved on the project, a 25% cut in costs to resolve construction errors, and an estimated 300 hours per week recovered in change management—with Sweco projecting EUR 1.5 million annual savings on similar projects.
