AEGEA Implements a Digital Twin at Manaus’ São Jorge District to Improve Water Quality and Asset Management Decisions

AEGEA, one of Brazil’s largest private water and sanitation companies serving more than 21 million people, faced challenges improving water quality and asset-management decisions in Manaus’ São Jorge district (a 61.4 km network serving about 10,000 customers). The remote Amazon location made frequent site visits costly and slowed detection of leaks and pipe failures, so AEGEA partnered with Bentley to pilot a remote-monitoring solution using Bentley’s OpenFlows WaterSight.

Bentley implemented a single water-infrastructure digital twin with OpenFlows WaterSight that connected SCADA, GIS, hydraulic models, and customer/billing data (linking Oracle and SQL Server sensor databases with 15-minute data updates) and leveraged WaterGEMS models for real-time simulation of breaks, pump shutoffs, and valve operations. The solution integrated all systems into one platform, enabled alarm-based leak detection and predictive maintenance, and—per AEGEA—increased operational awareness, reduced response times to network events, and optimized workflows for better asset-management decisions.
