Western Kentucky University cuts health care spend by $2 million with Benefitfocus

Western Kentucky University (WKU) faced the challenge of controlling rising health care costs after nearly two decades without a change to its benefits plan design. Partnering with vendor Benefitfocus, the university sought to simplify its benefits process and ease a major transition for its workforce.

Benefitfocus provided an intuitive enrollment experience and transparency tools to guide employees. WKU moved to full-replacement high-deductible health plans (HDHPs), a solution implemented by Benefitfocus that led to a $2 million reduction in total health care spend in the first year. Furthermore, 75 percent of employees saw less out-of-pocket expense under the new plans.
