Building Data-based Programs to Combat Rising Costs at Purdue University

Purdue University, which manages a $200 million benefits program for about 16,000 employees and graduate staff, was strained by rising health care costs—4–8% annually—and by being located in one of the more expensive states for care. The benefits team faced pressure to control spending without sacrificing quality across a diverse employee population.

To address this, Purdue implemented Benefitfocus’ Benefitplace platform and worked with their broker to mine claims and population data, personalize enrollment, expand voluntary benefits, and re-evaluate vendors. The data-driven approach produced targeted efficiency programs, empowered employees to choose and use benefits more effectively, improved vendor value, and significantly reduced time spent preparing for audits.
