Smurfit WestRock Improves Employee Engagement & Safety Performance Through Digitized HOP Safety Principles

Smurfit WestRock, a global sustainable packaging company with 500+ production facilities in 40 countries and 100,000+ team members, wanted to strengthen safety performance and employee engagement while aligning its incident management process with a new Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) program. After launching the program, the company saw that parts of its existing incident system did not match the HOP framework, so it worked with Benchmark Gensuite to address the gap.

Benchmark Gensuite helped Smurfit WestRock update its incident investigation forms to reflect HOP principles, add problem statements and controls, and use the platform’s Describe-It AI advisor for more complete incident details. The company also improved concern reporting with QR code access, anonymous submissions, and closeout notifications. Smurfit WestRock reported fewer OSHA recordable incidents, a reduction in life-changing events, and twice as many operational learning events in the system for continuous improvement as injuries.
