Case Study: Novozymes achieves faster, higher-quality R&D and centralized FAIR data with Benchling

A Benchling Case Study

Preview of the Novozymes Case Study

Building more sustainable products to improve life for future generations

Novozymes is a global industrial biotech (6,000+ employees; 700+ products; 30% of sales from new solutions) that uses enzymes and microbes to tackle sustainability challenges. As strain engineering scaled from hundreds to thousands of samples, a growing patchwork of point solutions created data silos, poor data quality, and forced scientists and data scientists to spend excessive time reformatting and hunting for results—slowing discovery and preparation of IP—so Novozymes needed a technology partner to keep pace with and accelerate its innovation.

Novozymes piloted Benchling as a FAIR, central source of truth, integrating via APIs and data-warehouse connections to its data lake and linking ELN, lab automation, and machine-learning workflows. The pilot standardized data capture, improved traceability and data quality, gave scientists faster, actionable insights (eliminating much system toggling), and reduced the heavy data-reformatting burden on data scientists—accelerating experiments, IP filings, and the discovery pipeline (results shown by the Davis, CA strain engineering team; global rollout is ongoing).
