Achieving optimal efficiency through 3p And laboratory workflow redesign

Bassett Healthcare Network, a large healthcare organization in upstate New York, faced the challenge of eliminating inefficiencies across its laboratory network. In light of decreased reimbursement and the need for a more integrated service line, they partnered with Beckman Coulter to redesign their lab workflows and implement new instrumentation, including DxC and DxI clinical analyzers, to optimize processes and reduce sample touchpoints.

The solution from Beckman Coulter involved implementing new chemistry analyzers across eight laboratories and employing a 3P Kaizen process to redesign the workspace and workflow. This partnership resulted in a 65% reduction in process steps, a 71% decrease in touchpoints, and a 20% increase in core laboratory testing volume. Bassett also reduced its core lab FTEs by two and cut the instrument footprint at two hospital labs by 50%, achieving greater consistency in turnaround times and significant operational efficiencies.
