Verifying Authorship When There Is No Handwriting, Paper, or Ink

ALIAS Technology, a forensic linguistics company founded by linguist Carole Chaski, needed a way to verify authorship and detect linguistic forgery across languages, including on very short texts like text messages. To support its investigations, the company turned to Basis Technology and its Rosette platform, which could provide multilingual parsing, part-of-speech tagging, lemmatization, and entity extraction for its authorship analysis workflow.

Basis Technology’s Rosette worked alongside ALIAS Technology’s proprietary parser as the first layer of analysis, enabling the company to expand into multiple languages and improve speed and accuracy. The combined solution supported cases in Arabic, Korean, Spanish, Italian, Russian, French, and English, and helped ALIAS achieve 96% accuracy in classifying bundled text messages, including a case where 23 of 24 messages were attributed to the wife, leading to dropped kidnapping and rape charges.
