Kanopy Brings Streaming Video to Libraries

Kanopy, a streaming video service for libraries and universities, needed a better way to help patrons find films in its catalog of 30,000+ titles. Its default Apache Solr search struggled with exact-title matching, spelling mistakes, and related concept searches, making relevant content hard to discover and affecting revenue.

Basis Technology helped Kanopy improve search with Rosette text analytics, specifically Rosette’s lemmatization function and Solr plugin. The solution boosted both recall and precision, made integration quick and easy, and led to a “great improvement” in search results with fewer complaints from users. By 2019, Kanopy was partnering with 4,000 public libraries and academic institutions.
