Barcode Inventory System Propels School District’s ‘One Laptop Per Child’ Initiative

Balsz School District in east Phoenix launched a “One Laptop Per Child” initiative but found its legacy inventory software couldn’t handle an influx of high-value technology, rising enrollment, and plans to add 2,000–3,000 assets. The district needed a user-friendly, barcode-based checkout system that integrated with Active Directory, provided real-time visibility, controlled user access, and supported reservations, returns and reporting across multiple campuses.

Balsz implemented ASAP Systems’ Passport asset-tracking platform with mobile barcode scanners; setup and staff training took only hours. The district now tracks more than 9,000 items with barcode tags, real-time syncing, configurable reports and secure access controls—giving staff immediate answers to who, what and where and enabling the successful rollout and ongoing management of the laptop program.
