Coca-Cola South Africa, a subsidiary of Coca-Cola Beverages Africa, faced challenges in creating a transparent and equitable recyclables supply chain. The company's efforts to drive a circular economy were hampered by the financial invisibility of over 60,000 unbanked recycling collectors, who are essential to the process, and a lack of transparency for buyers and sellers. To address this, they partnered with the vendor BanQu.

BanQu implemented its non-crypto blockchain technology to create a transparent and automated system for tracking and tracing recycled materials and payments. This solution provided recycling collectors with a permanent record of transactions to boost their bankability, gave buyback centers automated tracking of cashless transactions, and allowed Coca-Cola to see across its value chain. The results included registering over 8,800 recycling collectors, onboarding 104 buyback centers, and capturing more than 8,700 tonnes of recyclable materials.
