A Badgr Case Study
SURFnet, the Dutch National Research and Education Network, needed a scalable way to support a national digital credentialing ecosystem for higher education. As more than 100 institutions looked to issue portable, skills-based credentials, SURFnet turned to Badgr and its open badges platform to help create a unified infrastructure for digital badges across the Netherlands.
Using Badgr, SURFnet launched Edubadges, a shared national platform that lets participating institutions issue secure, verifiable micro-credentials aligned to open standards. The program expanded from an initial pilot of 16 institutions and established a common approach to design, metadata, and verification, helping make the Netherlands a global leader in portable digital credentials and giving learners badges they can share with employers and institutions throughout their careers.
