Queen Margaret University's Institute for Global Health and Development needed a digital research tool to efficiently collect and analyze data from refugee populations across the globe. The challenge was to create an application that was adaptable for use in different regions, accommodating various languages, cultures, and levels of internet accessibility. They partnered with vendor Bad Dinosaur to build the Social Connections Mapping tool.

Bad Dinosaur developed a progressive web app that works offline and can be used for self-reporting via secure links. The solution included a unique user interface with simplified symbols for easy navigation and tools for both numerical and visual data analysis. The Social Connections Mapping tool has allowed researchers to gather in-depth data in a fraction of the time previously required, with recent deployments including use by a humanitarian agency in Kurdistan and an upcoming study across four African nations.
