Case Study: Leibniz University Hannover achieves secure, scalable client-authenticated backup with Bacula Systems

A Bacula Systems Case Study

Leibniz University Hannover - Customer Case Study

Leibniz University Hannover needed an enterprise-grade backup and restore solution that supported client authentication across a heterogeneous environment (about 350 backup clients: ~40% Windows, plus Linux, Mac OS, FreeBSD, Solaris), with TLS encryption planned for the future and true scalability and support required. After evaluating several options, the university chose Bacula Systems’ Bacula Enterprise Edition to meet those security and scalability requirements.

Bacula Systems implemented Bacula Enterprise Edition with native client authentication, configurable TLS and per-client data encryption, and integrated the rollout into LUIS’s ITILv3-driven reorganization. The deployment migrated the university from legacy systems, now protecting roughly 600 TB of monthly full backups with automated LAN transfer and fast disk-based restores (with disk-to-disk-to-tape planned), delivered under a subscription model with enterprise support — a scalable, measurable improvement that has other academic centers considering Bacula Systems.
