Case Study: Institut für Deutsche Sprache achieves centralized, scalable, cost-effective backups with Bacula Systems' Bacula Enterprise Edition

A Bacula Systems Case Study

IDS Benefits from Bacula Enterprise Edition

The Institut für Deutsche Sprache (IDS) needed a reliable, centralized backup solution for a diverse environment of servers—some backing up in minutes, others taking days—and wanted to meet backup-window targets without excessive vendor cost. After evaluating options, IDS selected Bacula Systems’ Bacula Enterprise Edition on recommendation from Ulm University.

Bacula Systems supported a smooth deployment (training and responsive support), integrating disk and tape (NDMP for NetApp), VMware and Windows environments, custom scripting, and an “Incremental Forever” strategy to meet windows. The result was a cost-effective, machine-based licensing model with a university discount, robust offsite backups over a 10 Gbps link to the University of Mannheim, and reliable handling of very large data volumes (IDS stores ~27 billion words; ~0.5 TB raw can expand to ~3.5 TB annotated), protecting ~50 physical and ~60 virtual machines with prioritized recovery options.
