Caixa Geral de Depositos, a large international bank with roughly 3 PB of backup data and over 3,000 machines, faced rising costs and an operationally inefficient backup environment that relied on manual processes and licensing tied to data volume. Seeking to modernize infrastructure, improve sustainability and control costs, the bank evaluated open-source options and selected Bacula Systems’ solution, ultimately moving to Bacula Enterprise Edition as part of a broader hardware and network restructuring.

Bacula Systems implemented Bacula Enterprise Edition alongside new hardware, a redesigned network and training (with local distributor Hopla Software), enabling centralized backup management, easier job recovery across segmented network zones, and support for VTL-based storage with compression/deduplication. The changes delivered measurable impact: approximately €200K of annual savings, stronger cost forecasting by controlling deployed machines rather than data volume, and a more efficient, resilient IT backup operation.
