Case Study: BGW Group achieves more than 50% backup-window reduction with Bacula Systems

A Bacula Systems Case Study

Preview of the BGW Group Case Study

BGW Group - Customer Case Study

BGW Group, an Australian engineering and services company, outgrew its custom script-based backups (TAR, WinBackup) and needed a more sophisticated, centrally managed solution that supported tape and disk, virtualized VMware environments, bare-metal recovery for Windows and Linux, and predictable licensing. After evaluating vendors such as EMC, Commvault and Veeam, BGW chose Bacula Systems and moved from the community edition to Bacula Enterprise to meet those requirements.

Bacula Systems implemented Bacula Enterprise (including its Selective Migration Program and support) across BGW’s two main data centres, deploying two directors and multiple storage daemons and transitioning to disk-only backups. The solution delivered VMware-aware single-file restore, Bare Metal Recovery and the Virtual Full feature, enabling BGW to migrate 15 servers via BMR, eliminate a 3.5‑day remote full backup problem, and cut its overall backup window by more than half. Today BGW protects some 150+ servers, handles mostly single-file restores (about 95% of requests), and benefits from simpler, transparent subscription pricing and strong Bacula Systems support.
