Case Study: Bank Austria achieves tenfold cost reduction and improved mission-critical backup reliability with Bacula Systems

A Bacula Systems Case Study

Preview of the Bank of Austria Case Study

Bank of Austria - Customer Case Study

Bank of Austria, the country’s largest bank, faced slow, costly backups from a legacy Legato-on-Solaris setup and was quoted roughly €250K to license its tape library by the incumbent vendor. Seeking a scalable, enterprise-class, open-source alternative that handled tape robotics, cross-platform backups and reduced third-party dependency, the bank evaluated options and selected Bacula Systems’ Bacula backup and recovery platform.

Bacula Systems implemented a tuned Bacula solution (with a PostgreSQL catalog) that allowed library splitting, comprehensive tape handling, checksums for data integrity, and in-house testing and benchmarking. The result was greatly improved reliability and performance, responsive support from Bacula Systems, reduced hardware and licensing exposure (avoiding the large proprietary license) and cost savings “by a factor of ten,” while meeting regulatory requirements and simplifying operations.
