Pulse Secure, a provider of secure access solutions, faced the challenge of ensuring business continuity during the COVID-19 pandemic as the demand for remote employee VPN connections dramatically and unpredictably spiked. To address this, they worked with BackBox Software to intelligently manage their In Case of Emergency (ICE) license, which allows for a temporary massive increase in user capacity on their Pulse Secure PSA Series appliances.

The solution from BackBox utilized its automation platform to run periodic checks on VPN connection counts. When connections reached the maximum threshold of the standard license, BackBox would instantly activate the ICE feature, scaling capacity from 100 to 2,500 concurrent users. It also automatically deactivated the feature when demand decreased, preserving the license's 8-week allowance. This automated process ensured seamless business continuity for Pulse Secure's customers while optimizing the use of their emergency resources.
