A Backblaze Case Study
Pittsburg State University, located in tornado-prone Kansas, faced the dual challenge of protecting its data from regional natural disasters and the growing threat of ransomware attacks. The university's director for IT infrastructure and security, Tim Pearson, sought to add an immutable, off-site backup layer to their existing private cloud to ensure data integrity. They turned to vendor Backblaze and its B2 Cloud Storage with Object Lock feature to achieve this.
Backblaze's solution provided a virtual air gap by using Object Lock to make backup data unchangeable and undeletable for a set period. Integrated with their Commvault system, nightly backups are sent to Backblaze B2. This implementation, which took less than a day, gave the university 4x data protection. The results include robust ransomware protection and secure off-site backups, all achieved affordably and with minimal latency by leveraging the Internet2 network.
