How UCSC Silicon Valley protects online learning video assets with B2 for backup and archive

UC Scout, the University of California’s online learning program based at UCSC Silicon Valley, produces thousands of A–G approved videos for middle and high school students but ran into a storage crisis as their 128 TB media server filled up. Needing a cloud archive that wouldn’t require tape or burden central IT, UC Scout selected Backblaze B2 as the affordable cloud storage component of a new workflow alongside a Facilis TerraBlock media server and CatDV asset management.

Backblaze implemented three B2 buckets (backup, archive, library) integrated with CatDV, SyncBackPro and Cyberduck so editors can archive masters and restore assets quickly (often in about a minute). The Backblaze B2 solution (at $5 per TB/month) has let UC Scout move roughly 28 TB off the local server (Facilis now at ~100 TB) with a similar amount stored in B2, eliminate costly blanket backups, scale storage indefinitely, and support production of over 4,500 videos in under two years while lowering off-site storage costs.
