Valent cuts natural gas usage 49% with Babcock & Wilcox

Valent BioSciences, a biorational product manufacturer, sought to reduce fuel and maintenance costs by keeping one of its two Babcock & Wilcox industrial boilers in reserve. The challenge was that starting the cold, idle boiler on demand would take considerable time and risk overheating its components. Babcock & Wilcox provided a solution using lower drum heating coils.

Babcock & Wilcox designed and installed lower drum heating coils that used steam from the operating boiler to maintain the second unit in a hot standby condition. This solution eliminated the need to burn natural gas to keep the idle boiler ready. As a result, Valent BioSciences achieved a 49% decrease in natural gas usage in the first quarter, reduced CO2 emissions by nearly 4,000 metric tons over 18 months, and reached payback for the project in less than one year.
