University of Alaska Fairbanks powers a 17 MW CHP plant with Babcock & Wilcox

The University of Alaska Fairbanks needed to replace its aging power plant built in 1964 to meet its current and future electricity, heating, and cooling demands for its large campus in a sub-arctic climate. Babcock & Wilcox was selected to provide a solution for this challenging project.

Babcock & Wilcox designed and supplied a circulating fluidized-bed boiler and air quality control systems for a new combined heat and power plant. The Babcock & Wilcox CFB boiler, capable of burning local subbituminous coal and biomass, successfully met the university's power and steam needs. The unit achieved its required emissions permit limits and overcame significant logistical and extreme weather challenges during construction.
