TransAlta and Capital Power meet performance guarantees with Babcock & Wilcox’s 495 MW Keephills Unit 3 system

The customer, TransAlta and Capital Power, required environmental control systems for their Keephills Unit 3, a 495 MW coal-fired power plant in Alberta, Canada. Their challenge was to limit sulfur dioxide and mercury emissions to meet environmental regulations. They engaged Babcock & Wilcox to provide a solution.

Babcock & Wilcox implemented a spray dryer absorber system for SO2 removal and a pulse jet fabric filter combined with a powdered activated carbon injection system for mercury control. The project was executed on budget and below the original price estimate. Babcock & Wilcox's solution met all performance and reliability guarantees, ensuring high system availability and low operational costs for the customer.
