Southwestern Electric Power Company brings 600 MW ultra-supercritical power online with Babcock & Wilcox

The Southwestern Electric Power Company, a subsidiary of American Electric Power, required a new, highly efficient and environmentally compliant power generation unit for its plant in Fulton, Arkansas. Babcock & Wilcox was selected to provide an ultra-supercritical coal-fired boiler and a comprehensive air quality control system to meet this challenge.

Babcock & Wilcox designed and constructed the 600 MW net John W. Turk, Jr. Unit 1, which included a spiral wound universal pressure boiler and key environmental technologies like low NOx burners, SCR, a spray dry absorber, and a fabric filter. The unit achieved commercial operation in 2012, providing Southwestern Electric Power Company with a major source of efficient and clean power generation.
