Ørsted A/S reduces district heating CO2 emissions by 83% with Babcock & Wilcox

Ørsted A/S, a major energy company, sought to convert its coal- and gas-fired Skaerbaek power plant to a more sustainable operation. The challenge was to design a new system capable of supplying reliable district heating and electricity while significantly reducing carbon emissions. Babcock & Wilcox was selected to provide a solution using its Vølund biomass boiler technology.

Babcock & Wilcox designed, manufactured, and commissioned two 154 MW biomass boilers to run on sustainably sourced wood chips. This solution provided maximum fuel flexibility and allowed energy production to be controlled based on demand. The project successfully allows the plant to supply approximately 60,000 households with clean energy. The conversion reduces the plant's CO2 emissions from district heating by approximately 83%, a reduction of 79,000 tonnes of CO2 each year.
