Progress Energy removes 97% of entering SO2 with Babcock & Wilcox

Progress Energy required advanced environmental systems for its Roxboro Station coal-fired power plant to meet emissions standards. Babcock & Wilcox was selected to provide a wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system designed for high reliability and efficiency.

Babcock & Wilcox engineered, procured, and commissioned a limestone forced oxidation FGD system designed to remove 97% of entering SO2 without organic acid addition. The solution included four absorbers and supporting systems. The project successfully met all engineering, fabrication, and delivery objectives, with the systems for all four units achieving commercial operation between 2007 and 2008.
