Progress Energy achieves 97% SO2 removal with Babcock & Wilcox

Progress Energy, a utility company based in North Carolina, required a flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system for its Asheville Station coal-fired power plant to meet environmental standards. Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) was selected to provide a wet FGD system designed for high reliability and removal efficiency.

Babcock & Wilcox engineered and commissioned a wet FGD system featuring its signature tray tower design, patented inlet awning, and forced oxidation. The solution was designed to remove 97% of SO2 without organic acid addition. The project met all delivery and performance objectives, exceeding guarantees, and received an Honorable Mention for Best Coal-Fired Project at the 2006 POWER-GEN International conference.
