Platte River Power Authority eliminates ash pond with Babcock & Wilcox SGC, retaining 100% redundancy

Platte River Power Authority sought to comply with environmental regulations by closing its bottom ash pond and eliminating its aging sluicing system. The challenge involved finding a solution that avoided the risks and high costs of water recirculation while working within the plant's specific space constraints and outage plans. They selected the Allen-Sherman-Hoff Submerged Grind Conveyor (SGC) from Babcock & Wilcox.

Babcock & Wilcox implemented its compact SGC system, which reused the existing ash hopper and eliminated the need for transport water. The solution met all performance guarantees and resulted in substantial capital and operational cost savings. The conveyor also showed no visible wear after its first year of service and provided operational redundancy.
