GenOn Energy achieves 98% SO2 removal with Babcock & Wilcox

GenOn Energy, Inc. faced the challenge of reducing sulfur dioxide emissions from its pulverized coal-fired power plants to meet environmental regulations. To address this, the company engaged Babcock & Wilcox to supply and engineer wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems for a total of seven units across three of its plant locations.

Babcock & Wilcox implemented a comprehensive solution that included limestone forced oxidation FGD systems designed to remove 98% of entering SO2. The scope covered engineering, procurement, and key components like absorber modules, milling systems, and an enhanced mercury removal system. The projects were successfully started up and commissioned in late 2009, with performance testing passed in mid-2010, achieving the targeted high removal efficiency for the customer.
