Appalachian Power cuts light-off time from 14 hours to 45 minutes with Babcock & Wilcox

The customer, Appalachian Power, faced a challenge where its John E. Amos Unit 3 could not safely light off due to significant issues with its ignition equipment. Babcock & Wilcox was called upon to assess the condition and refurbish the system to restore safe, reliable operation.

Babcock & Wilcox refurbished all 96 of the unit's FPS oil ignitors to OEM standards. The solution included cleaning components, repairing or replacing damaged parts, installing a new blower to prevent future ash buildup, and providing training to plant personnel. As a result, the time required for a full light-off was reduced from up to 14 hours to approximately 45 minutes, creating immediate and significant annual cost savings for the plant.
