American Electric Power removes 98% of SO2 with Babcock & Wilcox

American Electric Power required a wet flue gas desulfurization system for its Mitchell Station power plant to meet environmental compliance. Babcock & Wilcox was selected to engineer, procure, and construct a system designed to remove 98% of entering SO2 from the plant's two 800 MW coal-fired boilers.

Babcock & Wilcox implemented a limestone forced oxidation system featuring its signature tray tower design, patented inlet awning, and advanced mist eliminators. The project was completed on schedule, meeting all engineering and construction milestones. The commissioned units successfully met all performance guarantees for American Electric Power.
