AB Fortum Värme builds 37 t/h waste-to-energy capacity with Babcock & Wilcox

The customer, AB Fortum Värme, co-owned by the city of Stockholm, needed to build a new, large-capacity waste-to-energy line at its plant in Högdalen. The challenge was fitting this new unit, capable of burning both municipal and industrial waste, into a very small space between the plant's existing units. They contracted Babcock & Wilcox Renewable to implement a Vølund waste-to-energy solution.

Babcock & Wilcox designed and supplied a complete, flexible waste-to-energy system featuring a water- and air-cooled Vølund grate and Inconel cladding for boiler protection. The solution was engineered using a Plant Design Management System to maximize capacity in the confined space. The resulting plant, Högdalen P4, became the largest single unit built by the vendor, with a nominal capacity of 34 t/h. It successfully supplies steam to two existing turbines and complies with EU emission directives, achieving guarantees for low NOx, CO, and other flue gas values. The plant was handed over in March 2006.
