DDoS testing exposes critical misconfiguration error in MSP mitigation set-up

Babble Cloud worked with a Dutch retail bank, a digital-first financial institution operating across multiple European regulatory regions, to assess the resilience of its data centres during a maintenance window. With customer availability and trust critical to its business, the bank wanted to validate its defence against a range of DDoS attacks and ensure its long-term managed DDoS mitigation service was configured properly and performing as expected.

Babble Cloud carried out a structured DDoS testing programme across the bank’s sites, using simulated traffic from distributed test nodes and a VMware image to replicate internet-facing services, while testing UDP, TCP, HTTPS GET and TCP SYN attacks. The exercises exposed critical misconfigurations, weak alerting, and overreliance on simple IP blocking, while also showing some successful mitigation during TCP SYN tests. As a result, the bank received clear remediation recommendations, improved monitoring, reduced operational and reputational risk, and greater confidence in maintaining service availability under attack.
