A B Impact Assessment Case Study
Etsy, the Brooklyn-based e-commerce platform, used the B Impact Assessment to measure its social and environmental performance and found that many employees were eager to improve the company’s responsible business practices. Before using the assessment, Etsy had already been doing things like composting lunch waste and supporting local small businesses, but it lacked a clear way to quantify those efforts.
With guidance from B Impact Assessment, Etsy launched a company-wide B Corp-inspired “Hack Day” to generate ideas for improving the business, and many of those ideas were later implemented. The results included a B Impact Score of 105, up from the minimum certification threshold, with strong category scores in Governance, Workers, Community, and Environment, plus new initiatives such as volunteer leave, carbon footprint tracking, Etsy School, and internal learning programs.
