Supercell - Customer Case Study

Supercell, the Helsinki-based mobile game studio behind Brawl Stars, faced player-impacting lag caused by OpenJDK JVM Just-In-Time compilation warmup: 100–300 ms hiccups during the first hours after server startup disrupted battles, limited safe server load, and raised hosting costs. To fix this at scale and maintain global, on-demand server spin-ups, Supercell evaluated vendor Azul Platform Prime as a potential drop-in JVM improvement.

After production testing on Supercell’s Dublin cloud instances, Azul Platform Prime was deployed and delivered more consistent load capacity, reduced in-game lag, and cut CPU usage by about 20–25% for the same workload—allowing servers to scale up and down more efficiently without code changes. Azul Platform Prime’s improvements translated into higher server utilization, fewer player disruptions, and lower infrastructure costs for Supercell.
