When Microsoft wanted to offer an open-source Java option on the Azure cloud without complex licensing or end-user restrictions, it engaged Azul Systems to deliver certified builds of OpenJDK. Azul Systems developed Zulu for Azure—certified Java SE builds (Java 6, 7, 8 and beyond) designed to run on Windows servers and the Azure platform.

Azul Systems built and tested Zulu to pass the OpenJDK Technology Compatibility Kit (TCK) and Azul’s own test suite, launched it via the Azure Marketplace, and extended support to Linux and macOS; enterprise support plans are also available. As a result, Zulu provides standards-compliant, 100% open-source Java with no license charges or vendor lock-in, immediate Azure availability, and a simpler deployment path for Java developers on Microsoft Azure.
