Aquanta Uses Ayla Networks IoT Technology to Turn Nearly Any Water Heater Into an Intelligent Appliance

Aquanta, a McLean, VA-based cleantech company, set out to address the widespread inefficiency of existing residential and small-business water heaters — a major household energy and water consumer — without forcing full appliance replacement. The challenge was to retrofit nearly any gas or electric water heater to enable remote control, monitoring and integration with utility demand-response programs while keeping deployment secure, simple and cost-effective.

Using Ayla Networks’ IoT platform, Aquanta launched the Aquanta Water Heater Controller: an easy-to-install retrofit that accurately measures energy use, learns household hot-water patterns, and enables smartphone and web-based control. The solution delivered fast, secure cloud connectivity to market and produced measurable benefits — estimated residential energy savings of 10–30%, utility demand-response capability, and a scalable path to modernize millions of “dumb” water heaters.
