Essent deploys Axway API Gateway to govern the flow of data on the edge, securing web APIs and mobile applications

Essent, the Netherlands’ largest energy company serving two million customers and part of the RWE Group, needed an easy-to-use, secure and maintainable way to expose web services and mobile apps to the public, customers, partners and employees. The company wanted to simplify and industrialize service delivery—avoiding custom Java code and heavy server maintenance—while meeting strict security and interoperability requirements (SAML 2.0, REST/XML/SOAP) and integrating with its enterprise service bus.

After an RFP and proof-of-concept, Essent implemented Axway API Gateway as the API layer and first line of defense, attached to its ESB in a service-oriented architecture. By enforcing four security patterns and acting as a single front door, the Gateway unlocked internal services (about 140 web APIs), enabled four mobile apps and an EV charging-point service, automated processes that removed Java server maintenance, sped time-to-market for marketing campaigns and positioned Essent to scale further by moving the API Gateway to the cloud.
