Deploying Axway API Gateway to enable Web Services in the pension ecosystem and govern the flow of data

The Service des Retraites de l’État (SRE) manages pensions for about 5 million French public‑sector employees (civil servants, judges and military) and faced a pressing need to modernize a 40‑year, heterogeneous IT landscape. SRE needed secure, standards‑compliant Web Services to communicate with partners like CNAV (InterOps/SAML), an ESB‑like capability for internal systems without the cost of a full ESB, and the ability to scale and monitor a rapidly growing volume of data flows.

SRE deployed Axway API Gateway to centralize and secure Web Services, implement InterOps, provide a Web Services directory and “ESB‑light” transformation layer, and smooth traffic spikes while adding real‑time monitoring and alerts. The gateway now handles about 20 million messages per month (≈10/sec), delivers high reliability and scalability, covers ~80% of ESB functions at a fraction of the cost, and achieved full ROI within three months—enabling faster rollout of new services such as a planned website for 5 million beneficiaries.
