CarMax, the industry-leading used-car retailer visited by more than 16 million people a month, wanted a more modern, mobile-first, customer-centric shopping experience but faced a cultural challenge: adopting Lean UX’s rapid experimentation risked clashing with the company’s established procedures and the need for consistent, high-quality service across its large organization. The goal was to introduce Lean UX in a way that preserved operational standards while enabling faster design decisions and validation.
To do that CarMax reorganized its digital group and formed an Interaction Design Team that used Axure RP to create rapid prototypes, wireframes and high-fidelity mockups for user testing and cross-department communication (including monthly “Open Houses”). Within months the team iterated on dozens of designs impacting core services—scheduling test drives, vehicle comparison and research—while building companywide awareness and applying Lean principles across joint projects to accelerate learning and delivery.
