How STEGH enhanced safety and culture with an in-house team and Axon Technology

St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) reevaluated its security strategy after the pandemic as staffing pressures, rising substance-related incidents, and increased aggression toward staff strained existing third‑party arrangements. To bring security closer to its culture and needs, STEGH transitioned to an in‑house model and partnered with Axon, deploying Axon body-worn cameras (and later Axon Evidence) to enhance transparency, accountability, and staff confidence.

STEGH’s solution—an internal security team equipped with Axon body‑worn cameras and the Axon Evidence cloud platform—led to measurable improvements: calls requiring physical intervention dropped from about 1 in 9 to roughly 1 in 14–16, recruitment and retention improved as hires better matched organizational values, staff and patients reported greater safety and trust, and evidence-sharing with law enforcement was streamlined. Axon’s technology helped STEGH de‑escalate incidents more effectively while aligning security operations with hospital culture.
