A Axis Communications Case Study
Virginia International Terminals, Inc., which operates the Virginia Port Authority’s marine terminals in Norfolk, needed a cost-efficient way to handle rapidly growing rail cargo volumes (about 700 containers daily, surging to more than 900 at peak) and speed container log-in and inspection without exposing inspectors to yard hazards. They turned to Axis Communications (via partner Port Solution Integrators) to provide a network video solution for remote container inspection.
Port Solution Integrators deployed Axis Communications’ network cameras—including 32 AXIS 233D Network Dome Cameras on 100‑foot poles, AXIS Q1755 HDTV cameras for portal surveys, and cameras mounted on reach stackers with presets and onboard analytics—streaming multi‑angle images to a 12‑monitor video wall and operator workstations. The Axis system lets inspectors remotely zoom to capture container IDs, slot and rail car numbers, and damage evidence, dramatically speeding throughput and safety (handling 700–900 containers a day more efficiently), reducing on‑foot inspections, and creating a visual archive for liability and future OCR/analytics enhancements.
